چکیده

Several aspects of the biology European eel ( Anguilla anguilla ) larvae are still unknown; particularly, information about their functional development and feeding is sparse. In present study, we histologically characterize digestive system wild caught specimens leptocephalus larvae. The aim was to provide more understanding how food may be ingested mechanically processed in larvae, discuss this context its hypothesized strategy. Larvae were Sargasso Sea during “Danish Eel Expedition 2014” with Danish research vessel Dana. larval sizes ranged from 7.0 23.3 mm standard length (SL) at catch. We found that mouth/pharynx, especially anterior esophagus, surrounded by a multi-layered striated muscle tissue epithelium mouth/pharynx had rough filamentous surface, followed epithelial columnar cells multiple cilia esophagus. This suggests an expandable pharynx/esophagus, well-suited for transportation likely food-crushing or grinding function. tract consisted straight esophagus intestine ventrally aligned within body, linearly correlated (SL). intestinal part constituted up 63% total tract. typical absorptive structure, brush border well-developed villi structure. Some observed intestine, but any surrounding muscularis not observed. liver along posterior pancreatic located intestine. Our findings support hypothesis ingest easily digestible gelatinous plankton and/or marine snow aggregates. muscular ciliated appear sufficient ensure nutrient transport absorption through

Musculoskeletal anatomy and feeding performance of pre-feeding engyodontic larvae of the European eel (Anguilla anguilla).

Being part of the elopomorph group of fishes, Anguillidae species show a leptocephalus larval stage. However, due to largely unknown spawning locations and habitats of their earliest life stages, as well as their transparency, these Anguilla larvae are rarely encountered in nature. Therefore, information regarding the early life history of these larvae, including their exogenous feeding strateg...

Viral diseases of wild and farmed European eel Anguilla anguilla with particular reference to the Netherlands.

Diseases are an important cause of losses and decreased production rates in freshwater eel farming, and have been suggested to play a contributory role in the worldwide decline in wild freshwater eel stocks. Three commonly detected pathogenic viruses of European eel Anguilla anguilla are the aquabirnavirus eel virus European (EVE), the rhabdovirus eel virus European X (EVEX), and the alloherpes...

Genetic patchiness among recruits in the European eel Anguilla anguilla

Heterogeneity in genetic composition among recruits of marine species is mostly due to a large variance in reproductive success mediated by oceanographic processes. Temporal genetic variation in a population of the European eel was quantified over 2 time scales among glass eel (1) interannual samples (cohorts), and (2) intra-annual samples within cohorts (‘arrival waves’). A total of 789 glass ...
